302 What Should the Church Look Like?

Over the centuries, have the mission and method of the Church gotten out of focus?  An examination of the Church through the lenses of Scripture, history, and culture will enable you to distinguish between form and function and formulate a philosophy of ministry that will make your church most effective in providing the kind of corporate experience necessary for producing mature believers.

Required for the Advanced Certificate.

303 A Theology of Worship

Worship in the local church is often limited to one thing—preaching or music.  In this course, you will develop a Biblical understanding of what worship is, how we can worship, and analyze several different models in the local church.

303A The Sacred Actions of Sunday Worship

What is the intent of our gathering as a corporate body in the weekly rhythm of worship?  What is the content of this gathering?  How does the structure of our time together inform that content?  What role does style have in forming us as a body?  This course will focus on the design of Sunday worship.

303B Worshiping as a Way of Life

This course will focus on the life-style of worship.  How can we help our people worship God between Sundays, where they live, work, and play?  What are the disciplines that enable us to worship God intentionally in the everyday rhythms of life?

303C TrueWorship--Religion or Relationship?

Jesus, in John 4, talks about “true worshipers” who worship God in spirit and in truth.  Humanity is incorrigibly religious.  What is religion?  To what degree does religion enhance or detract from true worship?  How has the modern church’s quest for a personal relationship with Jesus impacted this search for true worship?

303D Leading Worship

He Must Increase.  I Must Decrease.  From the time of humanity’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden, our approach to God has always involved some form of mediation.  But now in the economy of the new covenant, we read that there is “one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Tim. 2:5).  How can those who lead in worship function without getting in the way?

303E Worship and Spiritual Formation

Lex orandi.  Lex credendi.  (The way of worship is the way of belief.)  This phrase from the ancient Church highlights the role that worship has held in the formation of the Church’s faith.  What implications does this concept contain for us as we seek to see Christ formed in the hearts of our people (Gal. 4:19)?

304A Seven Practices of Effective Ministry

Like having your own personal trainer, this course gives insight for any leader who yearns for a simpler, more effective approach to ministry.  Here are seven strategic principles that when put into play will bring focus and clarity to everything you do and turn your ministry into a winning team.

305 Sharing Your Faith/Using Your Gifts

As followers of Christ, we have been given two key exhortations from Scripture:  to share our faith with the lost, and to help build up the Body of Christ.  For the former, we have our personal testimonies and the Gospel; for the latter, we are beneficiaries of an extraordinary blessing–spiritual gift(s) from God.  The combination of these furnish us with everything we need to live obediently to God's call upon our lives.  Yet many believers are unaware of the gifts and are hesitant to share their faith.  This has led to diminished participation in church ministry and a weakening of the church.  Both of these trends must be reversed for the ministry of God's Kingdom to progress.

Required for the Intermediate Certificate.

305A Ladies, Is Your Armor Showing?

A devoted, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you:  your heart, your mind, your marriage, your children, your relationships, your resilience, your dreams, your destiny.  But his battle plan depends on catching you unaware and unarmed.  The Enemy always fails miserably when he meets a woman dressed for the occasion.  The armor of God, more than merely a Biblical description of the believer’s inventory, is an action plan for putting it on and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory.  This class includes video teaching from Priscilla Shirer and class conversation as we walk through our study guides.

NOTE:  This course is for women only.

Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or any department elective.

306 The Dynamics of Spiritual Gifts

This course will examine both revelatory and non-revelatory spiritual gifts.  One major factor that has divided the Evangelical community from the Pentecostal and Charismatic communities is the duration of certain spiritual gifts.  Most Evangelicals argue that the revelatory gifts, such as prophecy and tongues, ceased after the Apostolic Age.  Modern-day Pentecostals and Charismatics argue for the continuation of the revelatory gifts.  Both sides present compelling exegetical arguments to support their positions.  This course will examine all sides of this most controversial issue.  Students will read and discuss papers presented by both Evangelical and Pentecostal/Charismatic scholars.  This is a complex issue that requires careful consideration.  We will also explore the ways in which one can discover his or her spiritual gift.

307A Not Normal: Seven Quirks of Incredible Volunteers

When it comes to that certain something in volunteers, we are looking for something a little more extraordinary, something a step above, something not normal.  This course will address ways you can make the most of your volunteering:  1) Why Not Normal Volunteers are more like owners than renters.  2) Why Not Normal Volunteers are always looking for a way out.  3) Why Not Normal Volunteers are constantly imagining things.  Are you tired of working so hard to be just like everyone else?  Whether you are leading a team of volunteers to find their own volunteering voice, or you are searching for your own, this course will help volunteers find not normal in their own unique way.

307B Anatomy of a Christian Worker, Part 2

Being a Christian worker called by God to serve in the local church is a great privilege with many responsibilities and usually leads to multiple blessings!  However, even the most dedicated servant can become overwhelmed and/or sidelined, if proper care is not taken to make sure the worker himself/herself does not overlook a proper and appropriate maintenance schedule!  This course will seek to answer a series of important questions—each designed to help keep a Christian worker in great shape to serve.

308A Creating Courageous Men in the Church

Churches on any given Sunday have nearly twice as many women as men sitting in the pews.  This course will discuss why churches do not attract men, and how to create an atmosphere that is male friendly.  The course is open to men and women who wish to discover Biblical guidance for strenghtening the men currently in the church and for reaching men for Christ.

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate ministry elective or Advanced Certificate elective.

308B Fascinating Stories of Forgotten Men in the Old Testament

Throughout the 66 books of the Bible, there are 3,237 people listed.  1,700 men and 176 women are listed by name, and 1,291 remain unnamed. While many are well known, there are fascinating stories of forgotten men who shaped the arc of the redemption story, with both positive and negative influences. This course will examine the often forgotten lives of twelve men recorded in the Old Testament: Cain, Abraham, Esau, Achan, Samuel, Saul, Absalom, Rehoboam, Jabez, Naaman, Gehazi, and Uzziah.  The stories of their lives are as important and relevant today as they were in biblical times.

This course is for men only.

310 The Biblical Mandate for Evangelism

This course examines the theology and practice of evangelism.  We will survey the Biblical basis for evangelism through the study of texts in the Gospels and Acts.  Students will develop a personal testimony of faith, as well as the ability to articulate the Gospel message in a simple and accurate way.  Practical tools and training in how to share our faith with confidence will be the focus.  Additional emphasis will be on how the Gospel can penetrate the culture and society of our day.

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate required evangelism elective.

310A Personal Evangelism

Satan wants nothing more than that people will be confused and ignorant about the true means of salvation (2 Cor. 4:4), because it is through the Gospel alone that people can escape his realm (Acts 26:18).  Only we have the message that can bring release.  It is imperative for the Christian to have the absolute assurance of his own eternal life before he can live a productive life for God and help others to come to the position and assurance of right standing before God.  The aim of the course is to explain the indispensable content of the message we need to proclaim, to determine whether or not our hearers understand the message, and to provide a method that will lead them to believe the message that “has delivered us from the domain of darkness.” (Col. 1:13)

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate required evangelism elective.

310B How to Evangelize When Nobody Wants to Listen

How can Christians be the salt of the earth and the light of the world in order to be more effective witnesses and thus make Christ more attractive to our culture?  Admittedly, there are many ways and dogmas about how to evangelize.  This hands-on course will attempt to survey and critique the various approaches while also looking at our culture, human inclinations and needs, and our own limitations and the necessity for personal growth.

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate evangelism elective requirment.

312A Fundamentals of Islamic Faith and Practices

This course deals with the fundamentals of Islamic faith practices.  While looking at the history of Islam, the course seeks to understand the present and future of Islam.  Answers to very basic questions will build a foundation for other more critical courses in the Understanding Missions and Islam Certificate program, courses that will instruct about the articles of Islamic faith and the pillars of Islam that Muslims believe Islam stands on.  This course will begin to lay the foundations for Islamic beliefs.  Students will learn why Muslims dress in particular ways (the women in veil and some men in long shirts worn as a gown).  Other questions to be answered—Why do Muslims believe as they do? What is Ramadan? Why do Muslims go to Mecca for pilgrimage?

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate.

312B Understanding Jihad, Qur'an, and Hadith

History exits to teach us about the good and evil done by people in the past so that we may avoid in the present such conflicts that cause evil.  President Ronald Reagan said,  “Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction.  It is not ours by inheritance, it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.  Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”  Many Americans are anticipating an ideological invasion of Islam in the United States of America.  They are afraid that Sharia is creeping into our society, and taking over inch by inch.  This class will provide a brief history of Islam to show the expansion of Islam as a political, social, cultural, militaristic, and religious movement.  It will reveal how the development of Islam in the past 1400 years has brought greater conflict in the world and will examine the behavior of Muslims toward other non-Muslim nations, while revealing hidden agendas of Arabic invasion in the past and the connection of these invasions with the present and future events.

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate.

312C Jesus in the Qur'an and Hadith

Muslims claim to believe in Jesus yet they deny His divinity, death, and resurrection.  What type of Jesus is mentioned in the Qur'an and Hadith?  Muslims believe that whatever the Qur'an says becomes the final authority to determine decisions which may cause death or life.  One of the ways Christians can communicate to a Muslim is through bringing Jesus up-front from the pages of the Qur'an.  Did you know that in the Qur'an Jesus is called Messiah, the Spirit of God, and the healer and provider?  That the Qur'an describes some of the miracles performed by Jesus in a way that proves Jesus Christ is God?  That the Qu'ran states no Mulim can be a Muslim unless he or she believes in Jesus?  One of the best ways to reach out to a Muslim friend or a Muslim neighbor is through their own beliefs and knowledge.  The books of Islam shape both the culture and philosophy of the Muslim world.  The Qur'an means "reading" the holy book of Islam.  The Hadith means "tradition."  After the death of Muhammad, his followers collected his sayings and actions in books to guide and direct their beliefs.  This collection gives additional meaning behind the Surahs (chapters) of the Qur'an and help interpret their meanings.  In recent years it has become imperative for Americans to understand the Qur'an and Hadith.

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate

312D Comparison of Jesus and Muhammad

The Islamic prophet Muhammad became a legend and one of the most influential persons in the world within 23 years of his ministry.  His life and instruction continues to influence the world.  No one can understand Islam without understanding the life of Muhammad.  The Qur'an teaches that Muhammad was the best person to follow because he was the best in all of creation.  This claim is in direct conflict with the Bible's claim about Jesus.  This course will present the ministry of Muhammad, his life and life-style, in comparison to Jesus' ministry, His life and life-style, and will examine their lives before, during, and after their ministries and the proclamation of their message.  The comparison will be made in what the Qur'an and the Bible teach about Jesus and Muhammad.

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate

312E Missions and the Muslim Next Door

Muslims make up 40% of the total unreached people groups.  Therefore, Islamic countries and communities are the largest missions fiield.  The Islamic holy book, Qur'an, claims to be the last and complete revelation of God that was given to the most favorite prophet of Allah, Muhammad at the age of 40.  Muslims throughout the world claim that the Qur'an is pure and infallible, promised by Allah to protect it until the very end of the world from any corruption or change.  Meanwhite, Muslims claim that the Bible has been changed and thus no longer a valid revelation of God.  This course is an intense comparison of the Qur'anic cliams and the Biblical claims regarding the text and the historical preservation of each.  The teaching of both books and the fulfillment of some of the claims both books have made will be examined.  This is a course for those who wish to understand Islamic apologetics.  The course will focus on Muslim communities in New York City as local mission fields

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate

312H The Muslim Next Door

In today's world of conflict and change, no one can escape the reality that Islam is spreading very fast.  Since 9/11, the Muslim population has doubled in the USA.  Muslims are building mosques and Islamic centers throughout the country.  There is an increasing fear among Americans of the imminent threat of terrorism by Mulims in America.  What does Islam teach about terrorism?  What is Jihad?  What does Islam teach about Christians and Jesus?  What are the basic beliefs of Muslims?  Are all Muslims extremists?  How about the ones living among us?  Do Muslims hate non-Muslims (specifically Christians and Jews)?  Is Islam a religion of peace?  These and many other questions will be answered in this class by looking at the Islamic literature.

A Christian Response to ISIS

This course deals with some of the fundamental questions that the world is raising today concerning Islam, terrorism, the rise of ISIS and the threat it poses to the West as well as the Islamic world.  It will discuss ISIS and its brutality in the context of Christian missions and persecution.  When confronted with Christians being buried alive or barbarically decapitated . . . when confronted with the burned bodies of our little ones . . . when confronted with the reality that ISIS terrorists are growing in power . . . how should the Church respond?
Fulfills Intermediate ministry elective or Advanced elective.

313 Prison Ministry, Me, and My Church

Many in NYC have relatives or know of others who have been in prison or are in prison.  Prison is a place where even a mighty man seeks to look for a supreme being, someone who can come to his aid. This course is based on the belief that crime, at its core, is both a moral and a spiritual problem.  Learn how to have a ministry with prisoners and their families that will effect authentic and lasting change that takes place from the inside out—beginning with a reconciled relationship with God through Jesus Christ and then, as people learn more about the truth and the power of Christ, learning to think in a new way, to act in a new way, and to relate to others in a new way.

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate.

314 Introduction to Pre-Colonial Christianity in Africa and Asia

This course offers a survey of Christian history from the Apostolic times through pre-colonial period in Africa and Asia. Students will be able to identify and explain key figures and events from the early church period to pre-colonial times in Africa and Asia. Students will have a better understanding of Christians of diverse times and places and a gratitude to God for preserving and working through an imperfect church.

319C Creation and Its Impact on Evangelism

God’s Word is true from the beginning (Ps. 119:160), and the beginning of it tells us how God created the universe.  We live in a world that rejects the biblical teaching of creation both in our educational institutions and in the media.  The Christian needs to know how to evaluate the competing points of view about origins.  The aim of this course is to demonstrate that the evolutionary position, despite its claims, is deficient in logic as well as in its failure to expalin the scientific evidence.  The creationist position is the exclusively reasonable one because it alone meets the standard of the basic principles of logic.  Also, without a correct understanding of “Who am I?” and Where did I come from?”, there can be no real evangelism.

320 Spiritual Formation: Growing in Character, Obedience, and Service

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus said the church is to "make disciples of all the nations" but few concepts are more ignored or misunderstood in many local churches.  In this course students will seek to understand what discipleship (also called spiritual formation) is, what God uses to accomplish this, and how to prayerfully evaluate their own discipleship journey.

Qualifies for the Church Leadership Certificate.

321A Fulfilling the Disciple-making Mandate

When people are asked what their church is doing about discipleship, most people’s default answer is “we have Sunday School” or “we do Christian Education.”  This class will ask questions like—is this what Jesus had in mind when He gave us the Great Commission? or might there be a better way to do this in today’s world?  Churches that are growing today are churches that are growing disciples.  They take disciple-making seriously.  In this class, we will look at models of discipleship the Church has used historically, ask whether current practices work, consider today’s cultural challenges, and learn how you can personally be involved in discipling someone.

  • Spring I - 2018 Saturdays, 9:00 am

321B Maintenance for Healthy Churches

Without proper maintenance, any machine will not function well.  After a prolonged period, the same machine will not function at all.  The machine ceases to be able to accomplish the purpose for which it was designed.  In the same way, our churches need maintenance or they will not accomplish their designed purpose—disciple-making.  Revelation 2–3 is in many ways a case study of churches that had missed some maintenance appointments.  Church leaders would do well to learn the lessons of these seven churches for the sake of their own ministries.  Emphasis will be given to understanding the historical context with practical application to today’s complex cultural contexts.

321C Discipleship and Essential Doctrines

This word—doctrine—has been tossed around in every church and very seldom do we know what it means.  In fact, there are essential doctrines that we must believe in order to consider ourselves Christians.  What are those doctrines?  How do we understand these doctrines as they relate to our lives?  In this course, you will learn several essential doctrines of the Christian faith.  You will learn how to apply them to your life, and to teach them to others in order to create disciples.

322 Discipling as Jesus and Paul Did

In the Great Commission we hear Jesus loud and clear say GO!  Yet, His command was not to “go” but to make disciples while going.  God has called us to make disciples.  Discipleship should be the purpose of any outreach whether it is local or global.  Jesus discipled twelve men.  Paul in 1 Cor. 11:1 says, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”  Both Jesus and Paul left a legacy of discipleship.  This course will follow the tracks of Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching with the examples of the lives they ived.  Biblical discipleship is a model of how Christians could and should live their lives.

Required for the Christian Missions Certificate.

325 Leading a Small Group Bible Study

One of the most effective means of both evangelism and growth in the spiritual life is through a small group Bible study. This course will examine how to start, host, and lead a study at home, work, or church.  You will explore the elements of a successful study group by examining discussion and study techniques, how to develop a sense of community, how to set the climate for maximum growth of group members, and how to make a small group Bible study one of the most rewarding Christian experiences.
Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or Advanced Certificate any department elective.

330 Biblical Leadership: Church and Leadership Development

Today the number one topic in relationship to church is leadership.  In the old days, all a pastor and ministry team leaders had to do was teach the Word of God.  In the last 50 years, there has been this great paradigm shift from not just teaching the Word of God, but also leading people.  This will be a great class for pastors, ministry team leaders, and people who are interested in learning more about leadership.  We will look at a Biblical view of leadership, how to lead in our current culture, and how to engage millennials as we move forward in discipleship-making.

331 Dynamics of Personal Leadership

What does it mean to be a Christian leader?  If you are a leader, what kind of leader are you?  There are so many different kinds of leadership and models of leadership in the Christian world.  What Christian leaders should already know is that the goal of leadership is to bring God glory.  However, God allows us to choose the methods and learn along the way.  In this class, you will have the opportunity to learn different models of leadership, and different styles of effective organizational development especially as it pertains to the church and para-church ministries.  You will grow as a leader in this course and become a stronger and more effective leader for the Kingdom of God.

331B The Most Excellent Way to Lead

This leadership course is simple, practical, and profound as it develops the leadership traits as outlined for us by Paul in I Corinthians 13.  It all starts with those famous two words—Love is . . .  Remember, “the best leaders don’t have titles, but they do have a voice people want to listen to!”

331C Leading Like Jesus--7 Principles of Thinking Like Jesus

As leaders of all kinds, the one thing we all have to do every day is make decisions.  In the big and the small, we make decisions that can have great and severe consequences.  Would it not be great to know how Jesus thinks and make decisions like Him?  This class will be a deep dive into the life and worldview of Jesus.  This is a great class for any kind of ministry worker who really wants to serve like Jesus to bring God glory.

331D The Missional Church

What does it mean when a church wins?  In fact, what would be a win for the church?  Is it having a great preacher or a great music program?  Perhaps it is having a great children's ministry or a fantastic youth group.  In order for the church to be effective, it must know and define what winning is.  The church must also know what the battlefield is and each leader must know what their part is in bringing glory to God by winning in the church.  This class will delve into the understanding of God's desire for His church and how effective leadership can bring about a successful win for the Kingdom of God.

339D Embracing God's Passion of Diversity in Your Church and Ministry

NYC is packed with diversity!  Our churches and ministries must embrace God’s heart and be intentional about reaching people from cultures and ethnicities other than our own.  What does God’s Word say?  How do I effectively navigate the unique circumstances, challenges and situations that arise?  What are practical ways I can effectively serve EVERY child, student, or adult?  How do I walk alongside those whose story, cultural background, and life situations are different than my own?  May the church, on earth, be as it is in Heaven.

Fulfills Ministry elective for Intermediate Certificate.

Or, fulfills elective for Advanced Certificate.

339F Leadership Structures that Fit

Sometimes it is easy to grab the “one size fits all” option from the store to save time.  The problem is that is often means “one size fits most,” and may not fit well at all.  Leadership in your church is a lot of work, and a great responsibility that God has entrusted to you.  It is easy to opt for the “one size fits all” option when it comes to doing ministry, and not think about whether this will work best.  This is not a church polity class.  Rather, it is a look at how churches function at certain sizes, and the practical side of how we do ministry.

339T The Life of the Leader--Time Management and Organization

Everyone has the same amount of time to get things done each week.  However, at the end of the week some of us have gotten it all done and some of us have not.  If you have ever experienced this frustration, this course is for you.  We will begin by looking at the Scriptures and developing a Biblical perspective on work.  Then we will learn principles to help leaders more wisely use their time, and organize their responsibilities.  You will sharpen your ability to stay on task and accomplish more for Christ.  Stop wasting time and join us.

340A Essentials of Family Ministry

When you mix the color red, representing the love of the family, with yellow, representing the light of the church, you create a beautiful orange. When the church and family work together, they are more significant than the two influences working alone. As leaders and Orange Thinkers, we allow five faith-building priorities for the next generation to impact the development of our family ministries. The Five Essentials of the Orange Strategy will spark conversations centered on developing an effective family ministry for the sake of engaging families in your community. A new family ministry vision awaits.

343A Gospel-Formed Identity: Developing a Faith that Will Last

The goal of generational discipleship is for our kids' thinking, affections, and habits of life to be shaped by Christ's story. We'll look at a few key areas. Creating intentional time that is built into the rhythms of the family's life to think about, talk about, and live out the gospel. Capturing and leveraging opportunities in the course of everyday life for the purpose of gospel-centered conversations. Making and marking occasions to celebrate and commemorate significant spiritual milestones of God's work in the family and child's life. What does it look like to lead our children in patterns of thinking, affections, and life patterns captured and shaped by Jesus's redemptive story?

343B Integrating a Family Ministry Strategy into the Local Church

"When you use the phrase integrate strategy, we are suggesting that your plan of action should synchronize with that of others. It implies you are combining multiple influences, primarily those in the hone and church, working off the same page for the sake of what you want to accomplish in the hearts of the next generation. An integrated strategy means that leaders and parents are leading with the same end in mind." (Think Orange)

343C Mobilizing the Next Generation for Today and Tomorrow

"What if service is also a catalyst for initiating faith in someone's heart? It is not unusual for students who are not believers to be rallied to participate in a missional effort that captures their hearts. When students engage in something bigger than themselves and see God working in the lives of others around them, it can be a powerful force to confront their personal need for a relationship with Christ. One of the best ways to stimulate faith is to give someone an opportunity to have a personal ministry." (Think Orange)

344A A New Kind of Leader

Think back to your teenager of childhood years and try to remember the person who influenced your life.  Maybe a teacher, coach, Sunday School teacher, pastor, family member, or friend?  Their influence on your life may have given you a new sense of direction, helped you see your value, recognized your gifts, led you to the Lord, or were a big part of your spiritual growth.  If someone showed up for you, then the question is, "How will you show up for someone else?"  What you do in the life of the next generation matters.  We will look at the following seven concepts:  Kids and the Students Matter, A Strategy Matters, Your Church Matters, Every Family Matters, The Truth Matters, Doing Good Matters, and This Week Matters.

Qualifies for the Christian Education Diploma.

344B Stop Recruiting and Start Retaining Volunteers and Leaders

As a ministry leader who relies on volunteer teams to get the job done each week, you know how difficult it can be to keep all of your volunteer roles filled.  Sometimes your ministry can feel like it has a revolving door, simultaneously bringing in new volunteers as current ones leave.  The cycle of volunteer recruitment and turnover can be overwhelming, leading to frustration and distracting from the mission.  We will look at four strategies designed to provide individuals with volunteering experiences that motivate them to continue volunteering.  Warning:  You may even see more of your volunteers inviting their friends to join them!

344S Teaching with Style

People really do want to learn, whether in church, school, or in a training class at work.  But one giant obstacle often stands in their way:  BOREDOM!  That’s right.  Boredom is the #1 hindrance to learning.  Communicators do not want to bore their students—it happens when they fail to see teaching as a role to which they are called.  It happens when personality and methodology are not empowered with style.  In this course, participants will learn how to gain and maintain attention and to put excitement and creativity back in teaching—where it belongs!

347A The Power of Small Groups for Kids and Students

In his book, 'Becoming Better Grownups,' Brad Montague says, "It was obvious, though, that the teacher had made it okay for them to be sad and okay for them to ask questions.  They might not have all the answers, but they would walk through this together."  Small Groups provide a space for our kids and teenagers to have space where leaders and peers are consistently present.  As Small Group Leaders, there is an influential role that you can have in the life of the next generation.  You may not have all the answers, but you can walk through life together with our kids.  In this course, we'll look at five elements of leading small.  As a Small Group Leader, you have the potential to encourage authentic faith in our kids.

347B Family Ministry Book Club

Becoming Better Grownups is described as: "When his first book tour ended, Brad Montague missed hearing other people's stories so much that he launched what he dubbed a Listening Tour. First visiting elementary schools and later also nursing homes and retirement communities, he hoped to glean new wisdom as to how he might become a better grownup. Now, in this playful and buoyant book, he shares those insights with rest of us --timeless, often surprising lessons that bypass the head we're always stuck in and go straight to the heart, we sometimes forget."

There are sixteen lessons in Montague's book that will impact the lives of our kids today and the trajectory of a child's life in the future. If you are a parent, aunt, uncle, godparent, Sunday School teacher, family ministry leader, mentor, Small Group Leader, teacher, or merely a grownup, this book is for you!

348 Playing for Keeps: Deepening Your Partnership with Parents

There are approximately 936 weeks from the time that a child is born until that child graduates from high school.  As a leader, your time is limited with the next generation.  If we view our ministry to teens and adults as a partnership with parents, we can maximize our influence and maximize the impact on the life of our kids.  This is why it is time to start playing for keeps and to get serious about how we view a partnership with parents in your ministry.  We will look at practical steps and application and six ideas to make it matter more.

What is the Gospel message?  How do you give an invitation for salvation to a child?  How do you counsel according to the need of the child?  What can I do at home? in my own neighborhood? around the corner? around the world?

What do today’s children need to know in order to become established in their new faith?  This course will examine the many basic spiritual needs of Christian children and then discover how to meet those needs from the Word of God.  Too many evangelized children lose their teen years to the world because they have not been established in the Word as children.

353N Spiritual Formation of Children in a Postmodern World

If today’s child is going to become tomorrow’s church, then we need to help him develop a Biblical worldview and then help him to learn why he believes what he believes so that he can defend that worldview with a child-sized apologetic.  The spiritual formation of children will happen in this unbiblical world—the principles in this course will help you make sure your children remain Biblically-focused.

363L Developing Teen Leadership: A Practical Guide for Youth Group Advisors, Teachers, and Parents

Leadership skills are what you need to manage a team, to stand out as an employee, to start a business, and to nail that interview.  The skills required to inspire and motivate others, to communicate effectively, to take initiative, and to make and execute plans are as important as a high grade score.  But how do you teach these skills to teenagers?  Parents, teachers, youth counselors and advisors strive to do so every day—but often have limited training on how best to accomplish that goal.  This course will assist in giving practical steps to effectively guide teens to become leaders.

363P Helping Teenagers to Pray

How far do you think your teenagers’ prayers scope extends?  Are they mostly praying about their own personal stuff?  Help me pass this test.  Help me make the team.  Help me get that guy/girl to like me.  Now do not get me wrong.  Those are important requests to bring to God.  Jesus taught us to bring our personal needs to the Father in the Lord’s Prayer.  But He also taught us to do more than that.

In this course, we will equip Christian leaders to assist teens in encountering God in quiet, contemplative ways.  This course will help you introduce students to a life-style of prayers.  Not only are there explorations of classical methods of prayer that involve silence, solitude, and Scripture, but you will also discover more recent forms of prayer that use creative media, music, writing, movement, and acts of compassion.  As you help teens bring prayer into their everyday lives, your students will find that they long for those times when they can step away from it all and find rest and comfort in God.

366D Urban Apologetics for Today's Youth

Much of the New Testament was written in urban settings, in which the Christian communities had to deal head-on with issues such as race, equality, justice, sexuality, money, and economics.  But much of today’s apologetics (engagement with the questions that people are asking about Christianity) come from suburban churches and academic studies.  Urban believers—those who live and minister in America’s inner cities—often face unique issues, not often addressed by the larger Christian community.  In this course, we seek to connect the riches of the Gospel with the issues facing cities to bring about healing.

Fulfills the Youth Ministry Certificate required elective.

367M Leading Youth in Missions

Take a group of teenagers—of all shapes, sizes, and spiritual maturity.  Add the challenge of sharing Jesus Christ in both familiar and unfamiliar cultures.  Mix in ample amounts of preparation, good role models, culture shock and experience, adventure, and affirmation.  Season with Bible study and prayer.  It all adds up to a dynamic recipe for spiritual growth that can turn your youth group members into world Christians.  This course will help youth leaders develop teens to think more thoroughly about mission opportunities wherever and however they serve.

Required for the Youth Ministry Certificate.

368 A Key to Youth Discipleship: Getting the Family Involved

Scripture calls parents to train their children in the faith and to nurture their children’s souls.  Yet few parents actively engage in their children’s spiritual development.  How can churches best equip parents to engage in their divine calling to disciple their children?  This course guides church leaders to develop a ministry system that equips parents to be the primary faith-trainers in their children’s lives, moving beyond mere programming into a deeper spiritual life at home, within the church, and beyond.

Required for the Youth Ministry Certificate.

369S When Sports and Religion Mix

We live in a sports-obsessed world.  From fans wearing their favorite team’s colors to high school and to soccer players practicing after school, we encounter sports every day.  Nothing else in our culture produces so much passion and intrigue.  Such obsession, for the Christian, must produce critical reflection.  How should the Christian think about sports?  What does Christ have to do with athletic competition?  Can sports be redeemed?  In this class, we look what happens when sports and religion mix.

In this class, we will look at the lives of various Heroes of Faith from the Bible and examine how their faith in God was tested and learn how God came through for them in their greatest time of need. The insights we glean from their experiences will help to equip and empower you to trust God’s faithfulness no matter what challenges or obstacles you may face. This course is designed to fuel your faith for without faith it is impossible to please God.

381 Leading Productive, Effective, and Attractive Men's and Women's Ministries

Deuteronomy 31:12 clearly states that we are to “gather . . . the men and women”.  However, what happens after they have been “gathered” is often far from productive, effective, or attractive.  This course will establish the Biblical foundations for men’s and women’s ministries—will provide strategies for establishing new ministries and/or enhancing existing ones—will provide helpful solutions to those age-old questions:  What should be done? Why should it be done? Where should it be done? When should it be done? How does it get done?  Men and women are the backbone of the church and the church has a responsibility to keep that “backbone” healthy, growing, and energized!

382A A Titus 2 Model for Mentoring: Women to Women

Mentoring is transforming the lives of women while developing faith and spiritual maturity as we enter into nurturing relationships with younger women in order to encourage and equip them to live for God’s glory.  Titus 2:3 reminds us, “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderous or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.  They can train the younger women . . .” (NIV)  This course will help to develop an effective mentoring program in the local church.  We will search the Scriptures to find answers to questions concerning mentorships.  What is an effective mentor?  What exactly is a mentor supposed to do?  What does the Bible have to say about mentors?

382B The Disciplines of Balancing Life and Ministry for Women

As we equip saints for the work of ministry, we must create balance in our active lives.  This class will help women to recognize the tensions that exist in balancing responsibilities of ministry and personal life.  It will help to develop ways in which she can live life on purpose by setting priorities in better time management, spiritual disciplines, and marriage.  Mark 6:30–31 states, “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.’” (NIV)    Are you a Sunday School teacher?  Do you lead a women’s prayer group? Are you a leader in the women’s ministry in your local church?  Let us explore how to balance our active lives and ministry.

386 Biblical Principles for Homeless Ministry

The objective of this course is to equip the student to create a personal response to “the least of these,” whom we know Jesus Christ loves.  Topics addressed will include sources of evil, addiction, and the second greatest commandment.  Students will also develop key strategies for working with this people group in a state of exaggerated need, such as living in community, handling correction, and reckoning with discouragement

387 For Our Neighbors: See What Love Can Do

So often the world knows what Christians are against rather than what we are FOR.  Do your neighbors know you are FOR them?  What would happen if we started acting life everyone is invited to the party?  This course will look at the life of Jesus--how He treated others.  We are called to love each other like Jesus has loved and does love us.  We will look at practical application in extending this party invitation to children, students, and adults.

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate ministry elective or Advanced Certificate elective.

388 What God Says about the Poor and the Immigrant

One of the most vigorous debates in contemporary American culture is how to address the needs of the poor and the immigrant in our society.  Often, political rhetoric and affiliation takes precedence over Biblical truths.  What does God say about the poor?  What responsibilities do they have to society?  How does the larger culture address the needs of those who are foreigners to the Christian’s native land?  This course will look at the many texts which express God’s ideas and concerns regarding the poor and the immigrant to create the proper lens through which Christians can understand and apply God’s truth in their church, in their community, and in their government.

389 Creating and Sustaining a Special Needs Ministry

A recent Christianity Today article confirmed that less than 30% of churches in America have a special needs ministry.  This class is a first step towards helping local congregations to evaluate their readiness for a special needs ministry, start and sustain a special needs ministry, and learn some of the basics of ministering to special needs children and their families.  Pastor Michael Herbert, Dean of NYSB, and Tanya Velardo, Children's Director at Renaissance Church, will facilitate this class.  Each week there will be a special guest speakers presenting information in their areas of competency in special needs ministry.

The Mission of God in the Local and Global Church

God is the initiator of missions.  It is the very heart of God—He sent His only Son to reconcile mankind back to Himself.  The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18–19 tells us to GO.  It does not say that we are to urge them to “come and see.”  Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”  This authority gave Jesus power over death.  This is the context for His next word, “Therefore, go.”  It is as though Jesus is saying that the time to “come and see” is over.  Jesus triumphed over death.  If you believe it, GO and make disciples.  Is the Great Commission a part of our everyday life-style?  In this course, we will study the importance of both local and global missions and the significance of short-term and long-term missions.  This course is the story of those who took the command seriously and then faithfully made a difference.  We will study the efforts of missionaries to bring the Word of God from Jerusalem to the ends of the world.  We will also study the emergence of mission methods.  Is God calling me to ministry or missions?

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate.

400C A Biblical Look at Missions and Missionaries

This is a great class for anyone who is thinking about going into missions or putting together a missions trip.  As so many churches go on missions trips each year, it is important to understand the Biblical theology and importance of missions and missionaries.  This class will take us into an in-depth study of the theology of missions and God’s purpose for the world.  This will go far deeper than the great commission, and thus take us on a journey to understand the great need that exists around the world for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

400K Kairos: God, the Church and the World

This Kairos course is a nine-session, interactive course on world Christian mission, designed to educate, inspire, and challenge Christians to active and meaningful participation.  The course utilizes a variety of adult learning styles including group discussions, short lecture introduction, devotions, video teaching, and student participation in specially designed activities.  Kairos looks at the four essential areas of mission concern which are--the Biblical, Historical, Strategic, and Cultural dimensions of mission.  This course is designed to lay a solid foundation in the life of the believer and of the local church for world Christian mission.  From this foundation, exciting and meaningful mission endeavors can result.

401 A Brief History of Missions

God is the initiator of missions.  It is the very heart of God—He sent His only Son to reconcile mankind back to Himself.  The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-19 tells us to GO.  It does not say that we are to urge them to “come and see”.  Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”  This authority gave Jesus power over death.  This is the context for His next word, “Therefore, go.”  It is as though Jesus is saying that the time to “come and see” is over.  Jesus triumphed over death.  If you believe it, GO and make disciples.  This course is the story of those who took the command seriously and then faithfully made a difference.  We will study the efforts of missionaries to bring the Word of God from Jerusalem to the ends of the world.  We will also study the emergence of mission methods.

402 Local vs. Global Missions

The last words of a person who is leaving you become a memory.  And if the person happens to be the king and his last words were his final command, then his followers ought to obey that command even if it costs them their lives.  Such are the words of Matthew 28:19-20.  If we truly believe these last words of Jesus, what more motivation do we need to be involved in outreach?  His promised presence provides the confidence and boldness needed to obey.  Yet many people are afraid of missions because they feel they have to leave their families or have to relocate to another country where they have to learn a new language and culture.  But Jesus’ other last words in Acts 1 about “Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria” mean that we start from our own home town.  The study of missions challenges us to ask how we are investing our lives when we go out from times of worship and edification at church.  Is the Great Commission a part of our everyday life-style?  In this course, we will study the importance of both local and global missions and the significance of short-term and long-term missions.

403 Changing the City with the Gospel

In the year 2007, the number of people living in the cities of the world—finally and irreversibly—exceeded the number of people living in rural areas.  The earth’s population is now more urban than rural and Christian leaders are trying to figure out what this means for the Church.  Pastors and kingdom-minded leaders know they need to engage the surrounding community with the Gospel but are unsure about how to do so.  Ministering in diverse and populous areas brings a unique set of challenges and promises.  Transformation in cities is vital.  In this course, we will help students explore the reality of cities, the potential of their own communities, and the broad strategies churches and Christian leaders need for kingdom impact.

405 Recognizing Our Calling and Following the Steps of Jesus and Paul

All the followers of Jesus Christ are called to the mission of God.  Many Christians though have asked at a pivotal moment, “Am I called to be a missionary?”  One of the most important decisions in life after the decision to accept Jesus for salvation is to determine how you can please God.  How can you serve Him?  What ultimate sacrifice can you offer to Him Who offered His life as a sacrifice for you?  God calls us, regardless of our age, gender, and ethnicity to serve Him.  This course will lead you through the Scriptures to help you determine if His call includes being a missionary.  In the Great Commission we hear Jesus loud and clear say “GO!”  Yet, His command was not to “go” but to make disciples while going.  God has called us to make disciples as a part of our calling.  Discipleship should be the purpose of any outreach whether it is local or global.  Both Jesus and Paul left a legacy of discipleship.  This course will follow the tracks of Jesus’ and Paul’s teaching with the examples of the lives they lived.  Biblical discipleship is a model of how Christians could and should live their lives.

Required for the Understanding Christian Missions and Islam Certificate.

409S Value of and Preparation for Short-term Missions

There is no doubt that short-term missions is very important to expose our congregations in North America to the needs around the world.  A cross-cultural experience for a short period of time outside one’s daily routine can bring lasting change in the life of the believer and the church.  This course will look at the structure, challenges, and benefits of short-term missions.  It is designed for both the church leaders who lead short-term mission trips (such as medical, construction, or simply helping a local church overseas) and the congregants who join the team.  The course will offer a step-by-step technique to plan for and implement  an effective short-term mission trip, including how to find a legitimate church or organization to partner with, how to recruit team members, how to inspire giving in the church for short-term missions, how to prepare in terms of medical needs, visas, fund raising, flight arrangements, and how to get feedback after each trip.

412C Expository Teaching and Preaching--Character Studies

Prerequisites:  101A and B

Biblical characters are the most fascinating to study and to teach about.  Each Biblical character differs and can be used as a paradigm for how we conduct our own lives.  Scores of books have been written about the major personalities in the Bible—Jesus, Moses, Elijah, Peter, Samson, and Paul, just to name a few.  Movies have been made about Jesus, Moses, Noah, Joseph, and the list goes on.  The teacher or preacher has an inexhaustible amount of material to present to one’s audience when choosing to teach or preach a Biblically biographical exposition on one of the personalities in Scripture.  This course is a study on expository teaching or preaching.  Exegetical soundness and accuracy is required of the teacher or preacher.  The course is both a study and practicum in teaching or preaching about Biblical characters.

NOTE:  Students who missed any two of the four courses, 413A–D, offered in 2017–18 can complete 412C and 412D and substitute these two courses to complete and earn the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

101A and B

412D Expository Teaching and Preaching--Topical Studies

Prerequisites:  101A and B

One common misnomer is that topical teaching or preaching is not expository.  The stereotype that many have is that the teacher or preacher must expound on a single chapter or passage from the Bible for the message to be expository.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  The first component of expository preaching is that the sermon must be based on the Bible.  While such a statement is self-evident, it is necessary to state.  Teaching or preaching is moving further and further from the Bible.  The second component of exposition is that the message must be exegetically sound.  A major objective of the teacher or preacher is to convey to the hearers what the Word of God has to say about a particular topic with accuracy.  The third component of exposition is that there has to be a controlling idea or theme.

Topical presentation must comprise all these elements in order for the message to be expository.  The advantage of topical teaching or preaching is that it allows the messenger to conflate in a systematic fashion a number of passages that relate to the topic being presented.  This approach enables the speaker to address issues that may be peculiarly urgent to the congregation.  This course is both a study and a practicum in topical exposition.

NOTE:  Students who missed any two of the four courses, 413A–D, offered in 2017–18 can complete 412C and 412D and substitute these two courses to complete and earn the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

413G Advanced Expository Teaching & Preaching; the book of Exodus

Prerequisites: 101A101B411A411B412A412B

This program is a continuation from the classes on Expository Teaching and Preaching Theory and Practicum.  The purpose for this course is to afford students who completed the Expository Teaching and Preaching Diploma requirements another opportunity to further develop their skill in teaching and preaching.  This course is a practicum.  We will not focus on the theory of homiletics since the theoretical foundation was covered in 411A & B and 412A & B.  Students must have taken these four courses to register for the following four courses.

Exodus is both a fascinating exploration and a foundational book for the study of the early history if Israel.  Most of Exodus is narrative, giving the homiletic student plenty of teaching and preaching material.  The student will be required to craft and deliver a message from this book.

Qualifies for the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

Required Textbook: Biblical Preaching:  Development & Delivery of Expository Messages, 3rd ed.; Haddon Robinson

413H Advanced Expository Teaching & Preaching; the book of Matthew

Prerequisites: 101A101B411A411B412A412B

This program is a continuation from the classes on Expository Teaching and Preaching Theory and Practicum. The purpose for this course is to afford students who completed the Expository Teaching and Preaching Diploma requirements another opportunity to further develop their skill in teaching and preaching.  This course is a practicum.  We will not focus on the theory of homiletics since the theoretical foundation was covered in 411A & B and 412A & B.  Students must have taken these four courses to register for the following four courses.

This term we will use the Gospel of Matthew.  Matthew falls into the category of Gospel, a genre that did not exist until the Gospels were written.  Unlike the other three Gospels, Matthew reflects a Jewish milieu.  This presents a fascinating challenge for the student of homiletics.

Qualifies for the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

413I Advanced Expository Teaching & Preaching; the book of Job

Prerequisites: 101A101B411A411B412A412B

This program is a continuation from the classes on Expository Teaching and Preaching Theory and Practicum.  The purpose for this course is to afford students who completed the Expository Teaching and Preaching Diploma requirements another opportunity to further develop their skill in teaching and preaching.  This course is a practicum.  We will not focus on the theory of homiletics since the theoretical foundation was covered in 411A & B and 412A & B.  Students must have taken these four courses to register for the following four courses.

This term we will use the book of Job.  Job falls into the category of wisdom literature.  This genre has very little narrative material and may present a greater challenge for the student of homiletics.  Nevertheless, the same principles for crafting a sermon that apply to narrative material apply to all genre of Scripture.

Qualifies for the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

413J Advanced Expository Teaching & Preaching; the book of 2 Corinthians

This term we will use the letter of 2 Corinthians.  2 Corinthians falls into the category of epistolary literature.  Unlike other genres, the letters in the New Testament present a list of challenges that are peculiar to the study of epistles.  2 Corinthians is the most difficult letter to understand in the Pauline corpus.  Unlike Paul's other letters, the occasion for this letter is difficult to identify.  Nevertheless, the material in this letter has been a rich source for students of homiletics.

Qualifies for the Expository Teaching and Preaching the Bible Diploma.

413K Advanced Expository Teaching & Preaching; the Book of Hebrews

This book is one of the most challenging books in the entire Bible to understand.  Like Romans, it is highly doctrinal and many of the concepts are esoteric.  One must labor hard to unravel the deep truths in the book.  This course will help students prepare sermons that are comprehensible and simplistic.  Students will be introduced to a variety of tools to facilitate their sermon preparation and help them understand this cryptic text.

415A Overcoming the Perils of Leadership

This course is a survey of the major challenges ministry leaders face and how to overcome them.  Students will study Biblical examples of how individuals dealt with power, criticism, sexual infidelity, depressions, marital stress, etc.  In addition, they will identify their personality traits which can hinder their ability to overcome the major challenges discussed above they will face.

415M The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make

This course will be a help and an encouragement to those who are in leadership roles, being considered for leadership roles, or wanting to build a skill set which will be ready to use when that call comes!  This course will take advantage of that age-old truth—great lessons can be learned from the mistakes of others!  We will explore both bad habits often developed by leaders as well as helpful hints which can lead to productive changes in leadership style and ministry outcome.

419C Leading Congregational Change

The church today is, in a sense, more powerful, influential, and wealthy than ever before.  Our pastors are better educated, technology and media tools abound, staff and outreach capacity surpasses any time in history.  We have been empowered with the keys of the Kingdom.  Have you ever wondered why, despite all this, Christianity does not have an unprecedented impact or even seem to make much of a difference?  Clearly, the church has yet to become a model for society, let alone reach its redemptive potential.  As individuals, we are prone to become comfortably numb and even complacent.  Church dynamics are indeed complex.  Leaders must leverage the opportunities of challenge and conflict in love, by grace, with the wisdom of Solomon, the resolve of Paul, and the patience of Job.  This course focuses on an understanding of the strategic leadership issues associated with Biblically balanced change.  It will help church or para-church leaders navigate these challenges more effectively and to improve the health of the organizations they lead.

419P The Pastor, the Politics, the Prophecy

The leadership at the local church tends to be driven by the passion of the pastor.  In some churches, the pastor may be led to be politically active and politcally connected.  The question arises:  Does the politics of the local church match the prophecy of God’s Word?  this course will explore the dynamics at play and will allow the student to determine whether it brings doom or glor to the Body of Christ.
Fulfills Advanced Certificate Bible elective or Advanced Certificate any department elective.

420A Minding the Business of the Church--Simply and Biblically

Although we cannot “manufacture” quantitative church growth, we are entrusted to the responsibility to be diligent in planting and watering in anticipation of the harvest (1 Corinthians 3:6).  Beginning with an overview of the theology of the church, we will consider her relationship to society and institutionalization.  Various models and resources will be presented as we probe the challenging Biblical and practical questions relating to growth and change within the church.  A balanced view incorporating organization and structure to accommodate the life of the church will be offered along with Biblically-based practical tools.

421 Effective Church Governance

Local churches grow or diminish in size, maturity, and effectiveness based in large part on the way they are governed.  It is one of the major challenges a church faces.  This class will help students to consider and identify different models of church governance and their practical application in a local church setting.  This course will seek to help students understand the purpose and qualification for church leaders; explain the different kinds of church governance; identify the challenges of local church governance; and evaluate and provide suggestions to improve church governance in their local church.

422A Effective Teaching: Understanding Basic Principles

Principles are fundamental truths or guidelines which when applied appropriately and faithfully, make what we are doing more effective. Unfortunately, too many teachers in our churches today are not equipped with those fundamental principles of teaching! This course will encourage you and better equip you to teach your students, as well as prepare you to help others sharpen their teaching skills, too.

422C Effective teaching is more than Lesson Content

Good, sound content is fundamental to effective teaching. However, even more important is the communication of the content of each lesson to the student. This course will help the teacher to be able to communicate the content of each lesson in a practical, life-changing, attention-keeping, and interesting way by better understanding the student - his/her need, his/her concerns, his/her learning skills, his/her interests, and his/her life-situation.

422D The Power of Small Groups

We have been commissioned to make disciples who make disciples, and one of the best ways to carry that out is through small groups. Jesus modeled the idea of leading small whether that is among adults, teens, or children. Just like the first-century church, small groups form the foundation to take the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Regardless of whether you have never lead a small group or have been leading one for years, all of us want to know how to create environments where spiritual growth takes place and communities are changed. The Power of Small Groups course will walk through the stages of gathering, launching, leading, and multiplying a gospel-centered small group. Jesus left his followers with a task—the Great Commission. This course will help small group leaders and churches in their obedience to this task.

422E Training Teachers – Who, Me?

…and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men and women, who will be able to teach others also.  (2 Timothy 2:2)

Too many people in our churches today are being asked “to teach” Sunday school classes and other small groups without being given any “equipping” classes before entering the classroom!  If you are a leader who needs to be equipping and encouraging the teachers for which you are responsible, this course is for you. Although this course is predominantly for those working with children and adults, it will have benefits for anyone responsible for training others!  Equipping teachers is an ongoing process!

424 Church Constitution and Bylaws

Besides doctrinal declarations, each church should have clearly stated guidelines for the operation and management of its organization.  Bylaws not only outline the daily operation of the church, but also circumscribe the power of individuals to prevent usurpation and financial corruption.  Bylaws should always be ascertained in accordance with IRS laws and established church polity.  Churches that operate without bylaws or a constitution are subject to abuse that will inevitably result in the demoralization and skepticism of its congregants.  This course will examine the Biblical and theological imperatives for bylaws.  We will also study a number of church constitutions and bylaws and compare them with our (student) church practices.

426 Managing Church Finances

The management of money in the Church is often seen as something separate from worship and ministry.  However, a close examination of the Scriptures reveals that giving and managing money is dear to the heart of God.  Some churches believe when it comes to money that they can ignore what the State requires in terms of the collection and disbursements.  This course will examine what the Bible says about giving and the management of money in the Church.

Fulfills course requirement for Church Leadership Diploma.

431 Personal Spiritual Formation

Emphasis will be placed first on the discovery of each student’s personality style, spiritual gift, and passion.  In the context of this self–discovery, each student who demonstrates serious discipline in the course will develop substantial familiarity with several of the classic religious disciplines such as prayer, fasting, study, and meditation.

431A Balancing Career and Ministry

Faithfulness, fruitfulness, stewardship ... how do we fit it all together in the busyness of life?  Moving from the more general purposes evident in Scripture, we will probe more specifically our individual calling, then apply Biblical and practical principles to our personal, family, ministry, and vocational context.

431C Life Transformation and Spiritual Power

God wants His children to live spiritually transformed lives.  Take a power-packed adventure through the book of Ephesians.  Let the disciplines of spiritual formation and the power of the Spirit of Christ transform you into a Kingdom-building disciple.

431D Spiritual Transformation Immersion

Imagine a two-week long encounter with the living God:  that is the culmination of this four-week course.  Together we will study the methods and techniques of in-depth Bible study, meditation, and prayer.  We will seek a holistic, Scripture-based, experiential encounter with the Holy Spirit, culminating in a two-week spiritual immersion experience.  Former participants have experienced transformation change in their ministry, prayer, and spiritual lives.  Perhaps you will too.

Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or any department elective.

431E Biblical Wisdom for Major Life Problems

This course will equip you to identify and draw upon the wisdom found in specific Biblical principles in order to better help Christians who struggle with major life problems, as well as to gain insight and help for your own life.
Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or Advanced Certificate any department elective.

437 Soul Care: Leading from a Healthy Soul

Every leader functions on two stages—the front stage or public world, and the back stage or private world.  One cannot lead successfully front stage when one is completely depleted back stage.  This course will show leaders how to prioritize matters of the soul, to develop healthy spiritual practices, to address problems that lead to burnout, to create a healthy rhythm in their lives, to improve their people skills, and to discover how to lead an unhurried life.  For the many ministry leaders who feel alone, in over their heads, or simply worn out, this course will offer welcomed relief and a healthy way forward.

437B Soul Detox

As standards of conduct continue to erode in our shockproof world, we must fight the soul pollution threatening our health, our faith, and our witness to others.  Without even knowing it, we inhale secondhand toxins poisoning our relationship with God and stunting our spiritual growth.  In this course, we examine the toxins that assault us daily, including toxic influences, toxic emotions, and toxic behaviors.  By examining the toxins that assault us daily, we can develop healthy patterns that focus us on the standard of God’s holiness to walk in His ways.

438 The Spirit of a True Man

Books on manliness and being a man are a dime a dozen.  Since the Promise Keepers of the 1990s to the movie Courageous, in film and mentorship, the church has sought to creat a vision of what a spritual man looks like.  Still, most churches have far fewer men in the church than women.  This class will tackle eight practical areas that will teach Christian men how to live what they believe.
NOTE:  This course is for men only.
Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or Advanced Certificate any department elective.

438A Biblical Portraits of Manhood

The Bible lists some 900 different men of various talents, skills, abilities, and callings in their role in the redemptive story.  Why?  To extract the principles of Biblical times for incorporation into a world with a twisted, distorted view of manhood.

NOTE:  This course is for men only.

438B The Four Dimensions of a Man

When the LORD God created man and breathed life into Adam, He afforded man the opportunity to live life in four dimensions:  in wisdom, (intellectually), in stature (physically), connecting socially (relationally), and with God (spirituality).  This course will put under the microscope the verse of Luke 2:52 which says:  "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."  Christ lived life out loud in this manner from His virgin birth to His sacrificial death and resurrection.  Each week we will look to model our lives as Jesus lived, so our lives are marked like the Master's from the womb to the tomb, by observing one dimension per week.  For to live the holistic life from Christ's perspective is to live a holy life.

Qualifies for the Church Leadership Certificate.

NOTE: This course is for men only.

439A Just Breathe: From Busyness to Sabbath Rest

One of the greatest challenges among women in our culture is taking time to cease from all the activities and just breathe.  We are in bondage to busyness.  We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us.  By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity, and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss out on some of God’s greatest gifts.  In the Old Testament, sabbath was given to the Israelites as a gift, and it still a gift to us today.  If you are weary, worn out, and exhausted, then the concept of sabbath will change your life.  This class includes video teaching from Priscilla Shirer and class conversation as we walk through our study guides.

NOTE: This course is for women only.

442F Which Worship Style for Church?

There are many styles of worship in the various Christian communities.  When one examines the New Testament, one is impressed with the diversity of communities, concluding that Christianity was not a monolithic faith.  Expressions of worship and practice differ from particularistic monistic styles evident in the Jerusalem and Judean congregation to the anti-hierarchical charismatic Pauline fellowships.  In this course, we will study the variety of worship styles practiced in churches and evaluate them in the light of Scripture.

462 Spiritual Sexuality: God's Design for Sexual Intimacy

475 The ABCs of Money Management: A Better Choice

Almost on a daily basis, we have to make some type of decision with our money.  Whether it is to buy a cup of coffee, put gas in our vehicle, or pay the electric or water bill, we make some type of financial decision.  Some decisions may be a regular part of daily living, while others can impact us over the long haul (our choice of insurance or investments, etc.).  We are all lmaking choices of some type for a variety of reasons.  The objective of this course is to help us make better choices with the money God has entrusted to us so we can be increasingly wiser stewards.

475A Managing Money Matters: Save Now, Retire Later

There are various types of investments we made in our lifetime, whether it is in relationships, education, or an activity we have a passion to be involved in.  What is acutely important is to invest in the Kingdom and in our finances during our working years to live comfortably during our non-working years.  This course will look at managing money matters from both a spiritual and practical perspective in hope of being more mature stewards.

476 Biblical Financial Planning

This course will take a look at the Biblical models which are available to God’s people to help them with their employment, personal giving, saving plans, and investment programs considering both the risks and rewards involved!  The student will have the opportunity to learn principles which will aid in developing a personal portfolio from an instructor who loves the Lord and has spent time working on Wall Street.  You will learn why it is important to Start Early!  and to Invest Wisely!

477L The Challenge of Leadership for Christian Professionals

A prominent elected U.S. official is leading a Bible study in the White House.  He is doing what Daniel, Hezekiah, and Josiah did as political leaders.  Christian professionals of today—doctors, lawyers, politicians, pastors, principles, teachers, nurses, builders, business leaders—are invited to come together to explore and share their leadership experiences and their answers to the challenge of leadership for Christians in the professions.

481 What the Bible Says About Homosexuality

Homosexuality is one of the hottest topics in the public sphere.  From the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 to the cultural acceptance of same-sex marriage and the “Gay Christian” movement of today, the LGBT community has championed and been a catalyst for a number of fundamental changes in the culture of the United States.  How does the Christian respond to these changes?  Can someone be gay and Christian?  Are people born gay?  How do Scriptures that were written 200 or more years ago remain relevant to this discussion?  How should we engage our gay neighbor next door?  Or in the pew next to us?  This class will examine these issues from a theologically conservative perspective and equip the student to speak in private and in public settings.

482 The Role of the Church in Government

Historically the Church has found herself under every type of government.  Some governments have been friendly to the Church while others have been hostile.  In the book of Acts, Luke depicts the Roman government as ambivalent and sometimes the rescuer of Christians.  By the second and third centuries, the Roman government intermittently persecuted Christians.  This course will examine what the New Testament says the role of the Church and Christians is in government.

482A Can I Be Both Christian and Political

When a disciple of Christ walks to a polling site to cast a ballot, the question should be, “How should I vote?”, instead of “Whom should I vote for?”  This course will look at the political influence in the lives of Joseph, David, Daniel, Jesus, and Paul to frame principles to look for when voting.

Fulfills Ministry elective for Intermediate Certificate.

Or, fulfills elective for Advanced Certificate.

482B Can Politics Trump Christianity?

Reports have shown Christians can be united in Christ, yet diametrically opposed to one another in their political worldviews.  Over the last generation, and certainly within the recent presidential campaign, this stark difference is growing ever more apparent.  This course will examine today's political trends in light of what the Bible reveals in terms of government's role in society and our response to it.

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate ministry elective or Advanced Certificate elective.

482H Alexander Hamilton in NYC: Saint, Sinner, and Statesman

Fulfills Intermediate Certificate ministry elective or Advanced Certificate elective.

483 The Bible, My Faith, and Social Justice

The old saying is that we are spiritual beings living a human experience.  As Christians, we seek to live out divine values in a world that is juxtaposed to such and is mired in conflict and chaos.  Abortion, climate change, the prison industrial complex, racial injustice, income inequality, questions about policing—these are just some of the issues we face as we attempt to live between Genesis and Revelation.  We are charged to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before God.  This course will observe “thus sayeth the Lord” in a world that cries out for social justice.

483C The Political Christian: Flag or Cross? Constitution or Bible?

In today’s highly charged political environment, Christians have to choose between more than the political labels of “liberal” or “conservative.”  Ultimately, the Christian has to choose between allegiance to the flag and the cross and between the Constitution and the Bible.  This course will look beyond the “given” course of action, and to what should be expected of a disciple of Christ.

Fulfills Advanced Certificate Ministry elective or any department elective.

493A The Pathway to Personal Growth: Spiritual Growth--The Foundation

Over the last quarter century, a cottage industry blossomed in our society:  self-help books, seminars, and experts.  The concentration on personal growth has at its center—self.  With “self” being at the center, the triangle points it forms, chiefly concerns “me, myself, and I.”  Yet the Bible offers a different perspective on personal growth—personal growth is essentially spiritual growth.  This course will explore the foundational aspects of spiritual growth through our interaction with the Trinity and with our feeling accepted and forgiven.

493B The Pathway to Personal Growth: Spiritual Growth--The Practical

Spiritual growth does not happen by osmosis; it is a result of suffering, discipline, obedience, and forever allowing the truth of God to transform us.  This course will explore the path of spiritual growth by observing what suffering and grief yields, the benefits of discipline, the fruit of obedience, and how the truth of God continuously transform our lives.

494D Divorce Recovery/Choosing Well for Marriage

T411B Expository Preaching, Part 2

Prerequisite: T411A or consent of the instructor

What if preaching could more than inform the mind?  What if it could also be an instrument to transform the soul of both the preacher and the listener?  Have you ever considered what could happen if local churches (not just seminaries or Bible schools) became the intentional breeding ground for the next generation of preachers?  The aim of this course is to empower ministry leaders to create preaching pipelines to develop the next generation of preachers while at the same time offering tools to deepen their own souls as preachers.

TFall 2 Leading Congregational Change: A Matter of Life and Death

Clearly the church has yet to become a model for society, let alone reach its redemptive potential.  Rather than proactively reframing and engaging conflict and challenge as opportunity for Gospel-centered ministry, we are prone towards comfort and complacency.  Leading through complex church dynamics takes the wisdom of Solomon, the resolve of Paul, and the patience of Job.  This seminar focuses on instituting planned change in churches and Christian organizations.

Cost is $25 per seminar.  No credit earned.
