186A John's First Letter
I John is part of the corpus of Catholic epistles in the New Testament. This letter is one of the workds of Johannine literature. The second chapter of the letter may give us the occasion or this epistle. John writes in the second chapter about a desertion of some of the members of the Johannine community. This abandonment left the commnity in disarray. John resaaures them that the Holy Spirit is their true teacher and they have no need of the teachers who are responsible for the rift in theri community. This course will exam the occasion for the writing of I John and the doctrinal issues that are embedded in this letter.
